50/50 and Zuzu’s Petals are the winners of our 2024 New Works competition. We received dozens of submissions, held staged readings for the finalists in October, and these 2 plays were chosen as the best entries! Each play is 1 act, so both will be presented, with an intermission in between. You’ll only have 1 weekend to catch these fantastic plays, but we’ve added a Saturday matinee at 2 PM in addition to our normal weekend schedule.
Synopsis of 50/50:
The story of a relationship. Will a baby be the glue that keeps Jo and Danni together? Or will they decide that the world doesn’t need another child.
Synopsis of Zuzu’s Petals:
Nick is selfish. Nick is inconsiderate. Nick is dead.
Having spent a lifetime in self-indulgence and excess, Nick’s only saving grace is his love for his 8-year-old Daughter, Alice. Following a meeting with Alice’s teacher, Nick is hit by a van and loses his life.
Guided by his spiritual guide Angel, he is given a chance to prove he can perform one selfless act for the benefit of another person, in order to win a final goodbye with his daughter. Transformed into the body of a 67-year old pensioner, Nick is left to figure out who and how to help the person he needs to aid.
In the guise of elderly ‘Arthur’, Nick strikes up a relationship with struggling single-mum Mary and as the two grow in friendship, Nick begins to understand the hardship and difficulty faced by Mary in her day-to-day life. In turn, Nick blossoms as an individual and becomes a great source of stability and strength for Mary.
Will Nick finally become the man he couldn’t be when he was alive, or will he lose his soul and more importantly, his goodbye with his daughter?
